Murano is famous for its glassblowing, but there is another, quieter art that has shaped the island’s glass for centuries: wheel engraving. This private experience takes you into the workshop of a master glass engraver, for an authentic look at a craft that is still done entirely by hand.

What you will experience
You will start by watching the Maestro at work. Using a fixed lathe fitted with small wheels of different materials, shapes and sizes, he guides the glass against the spinning wheel and carves the surface, turning simple lines into designs that look like bas-reliefs. You will see how patience and a steady hand create coats of arms, floral motifs, antique reproductions and much more on glasses, vases, mirrors and other glass objects. Then it is your turn. Under the guidance of the master, you will have the chance to try engraving yourself and discover how the technique really feels in your hands.
Meet the Maestro
Matteo Seguso was born in Venice in 1973 and lives and works in Murano. The workshop’s roots go back to 1954, when his father, Master Bruno Seguso, began practising the traditional Murano art of wheel engraving. Matteo joined the family workshop in 1999, and in 2006 it became “Matteo Seguso, engraver of art on glass”. He has collaborated with Lino Tagliapietra, one of the most celebrated Murano glass artists, and with leading Murano furnaces, designers and international artists. He also teaches engraving and cold working in Italy, Australia and the USA, and his work is held in private collections and museums around the world.
